Woman, 77, Saves Mail Carrier From Dog

HIGHLAND, Ind. (AP) -- A 77-year-old woman used her car to drive off a large dog that was attacking a mail carrier, saving the woman from more bite wounds.

Joan Michniewicz was backing out of her driveway when she heard Danielle Lawrence, 28, scream on Monday afternoon. Michniewicz drove at the mixed-breed dog and then yelled for Lawrence to jump in her car.

"I'm so lucky," said Lawrence, who has been on the job less than two months. "If she hadn't come, I would have been tore up worse than I was."

Lawrence suffered several bite wounds before Michniewicz arrived. The dog had pushed open a backyard gate and attacked her while she was walking up to a mailbox.

"It was a very frightening thing," said Michniewicz, a retired construction office manager. "But I thought, 'I just have to help this poor girl.' "

Police ticketed dog owner Sandra Kulchawick for allowing her pet to run loose.

Lawrence has been reassigned to a motor route.

"I don't want to say I'm traumatized. But I am upset," she said. "When I see a dog now, I get upset and fearful."

Oh PLEASE!! You make it sound like it was a life or death situation and a vicious dog involved. I know the dog owner, AND the dog. Not true, and she didn't LET the dog run loose, NIPSCO left her gate open, as they carelessly do with other people in the neighborhood!

While shopping at Sprouts today, I had a guy in the next checkout lane actually whistle at Frankie. WHAT?! He whistled to him like he was calling the hounds back from the barn. Then he went to reach for him. I actually placed my hand on this guys chest and said: "He's not a ranch dog, you shouldn't be distracting him, he's working." Mr. Cowboy didn't even apologize... but he got schooled! Oy.
